Paying Attention: There are four major golf tournaments every year: The Masters, The U.S. Open, the British Open (known in Britain simply as “The Open”) and the P.G.A. Winning any one of these four is considered the capstone of a golfing career. Winning more than one elevates a player in his standings among his contemporaries and history. This weekend, the oldest of all majors–The British Open–is being contested at a links-style course at Troon. Thursday was a sunny, cheery day that could have been Northern California on a very good day. Friday was the type of day that is more typical of Scotland: cold, rainy, windy. This weekend, the coverage will be pretty much wall-to-wall as NBC alternates coverage between the NBC network and The Golf Channel (also controlled by NBC).
