Nightshift Sports: US Open, 1 September 2018

Day 6
Context and Background
The U.S. Open, which started August 27th and runs through September 9th,  is the last tennis major of the year. There was a week of qualifying (the qualifying started on 21 August) and now the real heavy lifting began with the last week of the tournament now in progress.
Results
Men’s Singles:

  • Roger Federer defeats  Nick Kyrgios 6-4, 6-1, 7-5
  • Philipp Kohlschreiber defeats  Alexander Zverev 6-7, 6-4, 6-1, 6-3
  • Kei Nishikori defeats  Diego Schwartzman 6-4, 6-4, 5-7, 6-1
  • Joao Sousa defeats Lucas Pouille 7-6, 4-6, 7-6, 7-6
  • John Millman defeats Mikhail Kukushkin 6-4, 4-6, 6-1, 6-3
  • Marin Cilic defeats Alex de Minaur4-6,3-6,6-3,6-4,7-5

Federer has been professionally questioning of Kyrgios’ often unusual, mercurial on-court antics during the Open. He very dispatched Kyrgios with the type of cool talent and professionalism that the young Australian would do well to emulate. One of Federer’s greatest shots in the match was an around the post outside the lines return for a clean winner that left Nick stunned at the athleticism of it all.
Marin Cilic was taken to five sets in the last match played last night at the Open.  Matches had run long all day, and Cilic not only needed five sets to defeat the younger de Minaur, he needed until  just past 2:00AM (Sunday morning) to do it. Late night matches are unique to the U.S.Open and just one of the gauntlets a player has to run to win a championship.
Women’s Singles:

  • Maria Sharapova defeats  Jelena Ostapenko 6-3, 6-2
  • Dominika Cibulkova defeats  Angelique Kerber 3-6, 6-3, 6-3
  • Carla Suarez Navarro defeats  Caroline Garcia 7-5, 4-6, 6-7
  • Marketa Vondrousova defeats N Kiki Bertens 7-6, 2-6, 7-6
  • Madison Keys defeats Aleksandra Krunic 4-6, 6-1, 6-2
  •  Naomi Osaka defeats Aliaksandra Sasnovich 6-0, 6-0

Maria Sharapova remains the Queen of the Night at the U.S. Open. She has never lost a night match. Last night, she beat Jelena Ostapenko to keep a very incredible streak alive.
Tournament favorite Madison Keys came back from a first set loss to win in three over Aleksandra Krunic.
One of the top pre-tournament favorites, Angelique Kerber also went down; after winning the first set, she lost the next two to Dominika Cibulkova. Kerber has not been in top form at the Open and just could dial her game in time to avoide defeat.
