Context and Background
The U.S. Open, which started August 27th and runs through September 9th, is the last tennis major of the year. There was a week of qualifying (the qualifying started on 21 August) and now the real heavy lifting begins with the last week of the tournament now in progress.
Results
Men’s Singles:
- Dominic Thiem defeats Kevin Anderson 7-5, 6-2, 7-6
- Rafael Nadal defeats Nikoloz Basilashvili 6-3, 6-3, 6-7, 6-4
- John Isner defeats Milos Raonic 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2
- Juan Martin del Potro vs. Borna Coric, 6-4, 6-3.6-1
Dominic Thiem, who has a very big (and promising game) took out Wimbledon finalist Kevin Anderson in straight sets. The match was close but Thiem was successfully able to play within his considerable abilities and take a big win.
John Isner continued his march through the tournament, winning in four sets against Raonic in a battle of tall, big-servers. Isner seems to play his very best in the majors. He’s due.
Women’s Singles:
- Karolina Pliskova defeats Ashleigh Barty 6-4, 6-4
- Serena Williams defeats Kaia Kanepi 6-0, 4-6, 6-3
- Anastasija Sevastova defeats Elina Svitolina 6-3, 1-6, 6-0
- Sloane Stephens defeats Elise Mertens 6-3, 6-3
Jarolina Pliskova pushed Ashleigh Barty aside to move into the next round. She could be trouble in her part of the draw.
Not unexpectedly, Serena Williams beat Kaia Kanepi–who knocked out the tournament’s number 1 seed in the first round. Serena cruised through her previous match with her sister and was extended to three sets by Kanepi.
Sloane Stephens maintained her winning pace by beating Mertens in two sets.
