Nightshift Sports: US Open 5 September 2018

Day 10
Context and Background
The U.S. Open, which started August 27th and runs through September 9th,  is the last tennis major of the year. There was a week of qualifying (the qualifying started on 21 August) and now the real heavy lifting begins with the last week of the tournament now in progress.
Results
Men’s Singles:

  • Novak Djokovic defeats John Millman 6-3, 6-4, 6-4
  • Kei Nishikori defeats Marin Cilic 2-6, 6-4, 7-6, 4-6, 6-4

Both Djokovid and Millman were bothered and distracted by the heat, with numerous shirt changes for each. The understory of this US Open has been the very hot, disruptive weather.
The last American male in the tournament, “Big John” Isner lost to Martin del Poltro in four sets. Isner has been increasingly a factor in the late stages of Grand Slams but has yet to win one. Let’s hope that he picks up at least one major before his career ends…..
Women’s Singles:

  • Naomi Osaka defeats Lesia Tsurenko, 6-1, 6-1
  • Madison Keys defeats Carla Suarez Navarro, 6-4,6-3

Osaka is the first Japanese woman to make the semi-finals at the U.S.Open in over two decades. She is twenty years old and played extremely well in the tournament.
Madison Keys knocked out Suarez Navarro, who knocked out Maria Sharapova. Keys will be appearing in her second straight US Open semi-finals. Is the year she finally gets her major?
