Context
The tournament is reaching critical mass. Yesterday was “Manic Monday”, with all of the remaining men and women competitors on the court (that also includes the various permutations of doubles teams). Today, it’s the women only, playing in the quarter finals. The matches are being broadcast on ESPN.
Results to Date
Still in the tournament: Williams, Giorgi, Bertens, Gorges, Kasatkina, Kerber, Cibulkova, and Ostapenko. Serena Williams could find herself playing, again, for a Wimbledon Championship, after taking a year off to have her first child.
Federer, Raonic Nishikori, Anderson, Isner, Nadal, Djokovic, and del Poltro remain in the men’s draw.
In other British-centric sports news. English soccer fans will be closely watching today’s semi-final World Cup match, which pits France (now the favorite to win the entire tournament) against Belgium (a tough, smart team that is very disciplined). The match will be played at 2PM Eastern so if you have a chance to see it…….you’ll be in the company of millions.

Context
Back to work at the Big W. It’s Manic Monday and everybody left in the tournament will play in the tournament today. The middle Sunday break is history (some players practiced, some took the day off) but on this Monday, the Round of 16 Competition begins and everyone is in action. The courts will be very busy.
Results to Date
The last of the top 10 Women’s Seeds went out this morning, as Pliskova went down, defeated by the 20th seed Bertens, 6-3, 7-6. Serena Williams is on court against Rodina but Rodina’s run through the tournament will probably end today, as she doesn’t have the weapons to power on. Kerber (No.11 Seed), Ostapenko (No. 12), Gorges (No. 13), and Kasatkina (No. 14), all made it through on the women’s side of the draw.
Federer already played Mannarino and won in straight sets and Raonic won in 4. Niskikori, Monfils, Isner, are on court now; Nadal, Djokovic, and del Poltro player later today.
Other Notes
There was continuing talk about how the seeding of Serena Williams (No. 25), gave her an advantage, since by she would not have to face any of the top seeds until much later in the tournament. As it turned out, all top 10 of the women’s seeds are out, and Williams is now facing a rather mixed bag of competitors. Through seeding and bad luck for the women’s top seeds, she could have been given a pass into the quarters, semis, or even finals. Not the case on the men’s side, where some tough customers await all of the remaining players.
Also, England was glowing after their soccer team made it to the Semis of the World Cup, beating Sweden. England will next face Croatia. The winner goes to the World Cup finals to face the winner of the France-Belgium game (don’t discount Belgium but France has played very, very well in the tournament. In other British centric sports news over the weekend, Sebastial Vettel, racing at the British Grand Prix F1 race for Ferrari won the race over England’s Lewis Hamilton, who drives for Mercedes. Kimi Raikkonen was third and Bottas, also a Mercedes driver, was fourth.

Nightshift Sports: Wimbledon, Middle Sunday
8 July 2018
Embed from Getty Images
Today is the middle Sunday at Wimbledon, the “rest day” for the players, although you can be sure that the people behind the scenes–broadcasters, Wimbledon managers and organizers, groundskeepers and shopkeepers and the whole team it takes to stage the world’s oldest tennis tournament–will be working to keep things running smoothly. When play begins on Monday, the tournament will move into the Round of 16 phase, which means that both men and women will be on court as the pressure mounts toward the weekend Championship matches. Check out the Direct Link to the Official Wimbledon Site for complete information.
Results to Date
It’s been a brutal year for the top ranked women. Nine out of the top ten seeded women have lost in the first week. Top seeded Simona Halep went down yesterday, knocked out of the tournament by Su-Wei Hsieh, who was unseeded and brought a very unique style of play (two hands off both sides and, as one commentator noted, more of a “country club style” of play than a pro tour style). Makes no difference: it was effective and Halep is out. Still remaining among women’s seeds is Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic. Also still in: Serena Williams, returning to the majors after having a baby and taking time off the tour.
On the men’s side, Nadal, Djokovic (a little cranky at not getting crowd support when he ousted Britain’s Kyle Edmund), Federer and perennial favorite Juan Martin del Poltro all made it through to the Round of 16. Surprise of the day: Nick Kyrgios, the big serving, very talented Australian player who has inexplicable lapses in concentration, was beaten by Kei Nishikori of Japan in straight sets, 6-1. 7-6. 6-4. Maybe, someday, at a major, Kyrgios will put it all together for an entire tournament and will reach his spectacular potential. But, as legendary Texas football coach Darrell Royal often said, “Potential means you ain’t done it yet”. Royal did it often enough at Texas that they named the stadium after him. Nick’s got a way to go; the next major is the U.S. Open, maybe then……
Other Notes
England went wild on Saturday after their soccer team took out Sweden in a quarter final match of the World Cup, played in Russia. The entire country celebrated a very good English side that won without a goal from team captain Harry Kane, the tournament’s leading scorer. England’s play was sparked again by goalie Jordan Pickford, who made a series of point blank saves that were breathtaking for their quickness and the ferocity of goal tending. Pickford’s the real thing…… A great win for the Lions; they will next face Croatia, who beat Russia in a shootout. That match will be on Wednesday. France will play Belgium on Tuesday to decide the other half of the World Cup finals matchup. Coming to the end of a great sports drama and, so far, it’s been a very entertaining World Cup. Without Wimbledon today, Britain could pay attention to the British F1 Grand Prix and the second day of the Tour de France. Basically, a very good sports weekend for all.
