Shinnecock Hills: The US Open Course From The Air

Nightshift Sports:
The Us Open  starts tomorrow at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club on Long Island, in New York.  This is the second of golf’s four “majors” and is considered a very difficult tournament to win (aren’t they all?), because of the tight fairways and deep rough. The tournament, hosted by the USGA,  will be covered wire-to-wire by Fox, on the FS1 and Fox networks. To get you ready, take a look at the leadoff video produced by Aerial Landscape (we love drones) and this terrific video created by Golf Magazine, that also provides a “flyover” of the course along with some expert commentary.  Rain is projected for most of the U.S. this weekend (not necessarily the tournament but other areas of the U.S.), so–if you’re stuck inside–you can follow one of the world’s major sporting events. And, of course, Nightshift Sports will be following the US Open from Day 1 to Day 4. Get comfy, tune in, and enjoy a major, wire-to-wire.

The 2018 French Open: Wrapup

Nightshift Sports:

The French Open, often called by the name of the stadium in which it is contested–Roland-Garros in Paris–is the second major tennis tournament of the year and the last tournament of the European “clay court” season. The French Open will be contested from May 21st (qualifiers) to June 10th. Read our post on the art of clay court tennis. The First Round of the tournament started on Sunday, May 27th. Last year’s champions were Rafa Nadal (Men’s Singles Champion) and Jalena Ostepenko (Women’s Singles). Ryan Harrison and Michael Venus won the Men’s Doubles title and Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Lucie Safarova won the Women’s Doubles Titles. Nadal is heavily favored to win the Men’s Singles Championship again (he has won the French Open 10 times); Nadal will face competition from Novak Djokovic, Alexander Sverek and Dominic Theim. Women’s favorite is Simona Halep, who has been a finalist twice but has yet to win the tournament. Returning in 2018 is Serena Williams, former World Number 1, and Maria Sharapova, who has won the tournament twice. Petra Kvitova and Elina Svitolina are among the pre-tournament favorites.
Key Events to Date
Simona Halep beat Sloane Stephens, 3-6,6-4, 6-1 to win the Women’s Singles Title.
Rafa Nadal  beat Dominic Thiem 6-4,6-3,6-2.
This year both the Women’s Number 1 seed (Simona Halep) and the Men’s Number 1 seed (Rafa Nadal) in singles won the tournament. This does not happen frequently.
