Good morning, it’s Sunday, 31 December 2017 and this is an abbreviated Morning Edition of The Nightshift (the Media Bunker staff is taking an extended weekend off) and the last edition of 2017. It’s been quite a year and quite an experiment in journalism.
A massive cold wave is covering much of the United States with bitterly frosty weather. In New York City, the annual New Year’s Celebration in Times Square is expected to be the second coldest one in recorded history for the event. Wrap the pipes, stay warm, and be careful if you venture out in very cold weather–especially at night after the partying has started.
The rest of the New Year’s holiday offers plenty of bowl games–including the National College Football Championship playoff games (Clemson vs. Alabama; Oklahoma vs. Georgia)tomorrow. In yesterday’s games, Memphis State topped Louisville (31-27); it was Wisconsin over University of Miami (34-24);Penn State beat Washington (35-28); Iowa State won against Memphis 21-20; and USC got walloped by Ohio State (24-7). All in all some great college games on Saturday, with more coming up Monday (Michigan vs. South Carolina; Auburn vs. UCF). Also today: the last regular season games of the NFL schedule.

Today is New Year’s Eve and also National Champagne Day. Seems only natural that they go together.
Enjoy the day and the weekend with your family, your friends, and your pets. And…do one random act of kindness because…t’is the season.
Happy New Year,  and Best Wishes to all who have checked into The Nightshift in 2017.

Jean Shepherd: An Appreciation

Paying Attention:
If you are like millions of Americans, this morning your TV is tuned to TBS where the programming is 24 hours of the beloved movie classic, “A Christmas Story”. The movie was based on a monologue, which was based on the real life experiences, of one of the most talented Americans you’ve never heard of: Jean Shepherd. Shepherd was a writer, DJ, radio announcer, script writer, actor, monologuist He was exceptionally talented and had a unique view of America–and comedy–that influenced generations of writers and comedians and actors. Jerry Seinfeld said that Jean Shepherd showed him how to do comedy, and if you look at the underpinnings of “Seinfeld” (the show about nothing), you can see Shepherd’s influence all over it. We’re going to do more on Jean Shepherd later in the year, but today..as a special tribute to the man whose mind is dominating one of America’s top channels for the full day..here’s a complete broadcast of one of Shepherd’s classic monologues: The Great Indiana Blizzard. Get a glass of wine or pour yourself a nice Scotch on the rocks and settle back to hear a master spin and weave a tail about the extraordinary impact of everyday events. It’s here as our own, very special tribute to a very special artist. Merry Christmas, Shep.
