German ChancellorAngela Merkel, commenting on the European situation after the latest NATO and G7 meetings last week, said the days when Germany could “fully rely on someone else are, for the most part over”.  Is this a good thing for Germany and a bad thing for the U.S.?
The world climate deterioration could accelerate if the U.S. decides to abandon the Paris Accord. This would, of course, have implications for the entire world.

The Nightshift: 29 May 2017

Editor’s Note: After a spirited internal debate, the Nightshift team decided that in order to provide appropriate coverage for things other than the current U.S. Political scene (i.e. “the hot mess in Washington”), we would trim down the amount of commentary and coverage on U.S. political events to a very modest length and let you go directly to the world’s great newspapers for more depth and comment on the world’s news. That is, after all, the idea for this type of site–get the world’s perspective on events, not just an American one. The re-focusing will also free up time and resources to cover other  things: major sporting events, art, entertainment, etc. And it will enable the team to broaden the editorial reach and continue with certain experimental editorial/communication initiatives. Enjoy the break–it should be refreshing. And if not…..we’ll change back.
Press Clippings:

Weekend Concert Series: Allman Brothers Band

The Hunt for New Music:
This past week, we lost another rock giant: Gregg Allman, singer, guitar player, Hammond B-3 organ virtuoso, died at age 69, bringing to a close one of the legendary careers in rock music. As one of the founders of the Allman Brothers band–his brother, the great guitarist Duane Allman was the other brother–Gregg Allman pushed the band over four generations and was one of the driving forces that turned it into an international powerhouse and the leading exponent of “Southern Rock”. So–it seemed appropriate to post an Allman Brothers concert for this weekend. This one is a 40th anniversary concert, from YouTube and is from a March 26th, 2009 concert at the Beacon Theater in New York City.  It’s a good one. Enjoy and remember.

The French Open 2017: Warmups-Nadal At Monte Carlo

Nightshift Sports:
Rafael Nadal and clay court tennis–they are synonymous. Nadal has won the French Open 9 times–a record–and is the sport’s current reigning wizard on clay court surfaces. Although his game doesn’t always translate well to grass or hard courts, on clay is the master and there is no reason to believe that he will not, once again, win the French this year in Paris. He is finally back to good health, injury free, very fit, and ready to go. As proof–here are some highlights from his pre-Paris tournament win at the Monte Carlo clay court tournament.  Enjoy watching Nadal play–he’s a legend and you want to see him while you can.
