More drama from Washington and The White House, as the current President accuses the former President of wiretapping him/Trump Tower. All drama all the time in American politics now.
In sports, Carolina beat Duke in their rematch, 90-83. Carolina also won the ACC Regular Season Championship. Next up, the ACC tournament and then the NCAA National Championships. March is a very good college baskeetball month. We’ll need it.

Yesterday, March 2nd, was Dr. Seuss’s birthday. This weekend would be a good time to re-read at least one Dr. Seuss book…for yourself or your children..and to celebrate one of the great children’s authors/illustrators of all time.

“You are remembered for the rules you break…”

Paying Attention:
Yesterday, 1 March 2017, this site put up it’s 1000th post.
That post was, appropriately, a classic quote from singer/songwriter Warren Zevon on politics–perfect for our times.
Starting in 2011, the site has been publishing on a regular basis, typically three or four times a week, but over the last year, increasingly moving to a once-a-day publishing schedule that was initiated as a result of the development of “The Nightshift”, our daily global news feed of the front pages of the world’s greatest newspapers. The site has had an online presence continuously since it’s start date.
This site was created as an experiment–a chance to try different forms of web journalism, re-posting, and communication–as well as an outlet for articles and features (“Should Apple Buy Greece”; “What’s in the Black Box”, “The Good News about Bad News”). There have been continuing features like “Nightshift”, “Quotes”, “The Weekend Concert Series” and also seasonal events, such as the “Winter Film Festival” which posted 24 videos on skiing, ski mountaineering and snowboarding in lengths ranging from two minutes to over an hour over the course of 14 days. This summer, we will balance the “Winter Film Festival” with a “Summer Film Festival” focused on surfing and sailing.
The metrics are interesting: a total of 1258 posts in the archives/inventory; 1000 posts published online; 239 posts in draft/development form. The article inventory and the work in progress numbers are larger than many commercial sites, but that’s in keeping with the experimental nature of the site: lots of different topics, formats, and new projects. For 2017, the goal will be to finalize the draft/development inventory and put it all online, then re-build that inventory by the end of the year. Lots of expansion planned as well. It’s an experimental site and so the team at the Media Bunker must continue to push new ideas, topics, formats, information, out.
To the people who check in on a regular or semi-regular basis–thank you for your interest and time.
Going forward, we will be very aggressive in raising the profile of the site and publishing new and original content.
Thanks, always, for stopping bye.
The Nightshift: 2 March 2017
Press Clippings:
Good Morning. It’s Thursday, 2 March 2017, and this is the Morning Edition of The Nightshift, the world’s overnight news feed.
The New York Times and The Washington Post both published new and revelatory articles last night about the Trump/White House dalliance with Russia. There’s enough obfuscation and strenuous denial coming from the White House and its’ allies to lead an unbiased observer to believe that there’s something to the entire Russia/Hacking/Putin/Bromance./missing tax return scenarios to warrant an investigation. For the White House, the most obvious strategy is simple: endorse an investigation, get a clean bill of health, and get on with governing. Be totally transparent about all of it and settle the doubts.
Actions speak louder than words, so we shall see what course of action they pursue. We can be sure of the course of action of the journalism and communications community: they will continue to dig out the details until it’s all out in the open. There’s a reason Freedom of the Press is the First Amendment to the Constitution.
The irony is that the massive negative blitz by the Trump White House against the press–during the campaign and after–has totally re-energized the journalistic and news establishment. The New York Times and The Washington Post are leading the charge and it’s fascinating to watch. As Brian Williams said last night, “the White House has unexpectedly created a journalistic full employment program” with its denials, leaks, and negative attitude.
In other news: Kevin Durant, the prize offseason acquisition by the Golden State Warriors is out for at least four weeks with a knee injury; he should be ready for the playoffs. SnapChat goes public today at a valuation multiple that’s twice that of Facebook–did you get in? Continuing in financial news, Ray Dalio, the legendary head of the Bridgewater Associates, is stepping down as Co-CEO of the firm; Ray will remain as CIO at the firm, which also lost the other Co-CEO.
Today,March 2nd, is the birthday of legendary and quintessential take-no-prisoners New York rock star Lou Reed. Might be a good idea to cue up “Walk on the Wild Side” to get in the mood.

Press Clippings:
Good Morning. It’s Wednesday, 1 March 2017, and this is the Morning Edition of The Nightshift, the world’s overnight news feed.
President Trump made his first speech before the assembled U.S. Congress. It was understated, repeated the themes and objectives he made during his campaign, and had a totally different tone than he had shown in the weeks leading up to the address. The government remains gridlocked. We shall see.
In the great Academy Awards scandal….it turns out that someone was–allegedly–tweeting during the ceremony, got behind and confused, and grabbed the wrong envelope. Only had one job. Get the right envelope. Didn’t get it right. …and the Award for lamest excuse in Oscar history goes to………

The Nightshift: 28 February 2017
Press Clippings:
Good Morning. It’s Tuesday, 28 February 2017, the last day of February, and this is the Morning Edition of The Nightshift, the world’s overnight news feed.
The fallout from the Academy Awards mixup continues as the Academy has launched an “investigation” into how it all happened. Inevitable. Their time might be better spent trying to re-format the ceremony and awards show so that it can attract and retain a television audience because, once again, viewership for the four hour show was down.

The Nightshift: 27 February 2017
Press Clippings:
Good Morning. It’s Monday, 27 February 2017 and this is the Morning Edition of The Nightshift, the world’s overnight news feed.
The Academy Awards Show last night suffered one of the worst mistakes in history, when it mistakenly announced the wrong winner for the nights’ biggest award: Best Picture. Announced as “La La Land”, the award winner was actually “Moonlight”. The presenters were supposedly given the wrong envelope. Talk about Hollywood endings…….
