The Nightshift: 18 February 2017

Press Clippings:

Good Morning. It’s Saturday, 18 February 2017 and this is the morning edition of The Nightshift, the world’s overnight news feed.
Mikaela Shiffrin won her third straight Slalom World Championship, skiing at St. Moritz, Switzerland. Schiffrin will be 21 in March. She beat home town favorite Wendy Holdener of Switzerland by 1.64 seconds, which is a huge difference in the micro-second sport of world-class slalom racing.

The Winter Film Festival: "Attack of La Niña"

Edgework:
After the sheer intensity of the Hahnenkamm and the Haute Route, it’s time for some  relaxing…cliff drops and deep powder skiing.
Another great full-length film by Matchstick Productions and MSP  Films, starring Mark Abman, Sean Pettit, and Ingrid Backstrom, this video was released just two months ago and covers a record year in powder skiing. Sponsors and promoters include Subaru, Helly Hansen,  SalomonPowder Magazine, and Contour.
From the snappy animated open (with “The Hollies” doing the background music, I think) to the amazing skiing, this is a great film to finish off 2017’s Winter Film Festival. Enjoy this full length film to the utmost: kick it to the flat screen and run the audio through your sound system.
See you at the bottom.
Our annual Winter Film Festival, the Fourth one we’ve produced, concludes with this presentation of “Attack of La Niña”. The 2017 Winter Film Festival is now history. It’s been great fun. Hope you enjoyed the films and, again, we thank YouTube and all the companies involved in producing these videos and all the participants in them for sharing. See you next year!

The Winter Film Festival: The Hahnenkamm

Edgework:
The elephant in the room for downhill racers is always Kitzbuhel and the famous Hanenkamm downhill course. Some will say it’s exhilerating; all will say it’s scary. This video, produced by FIS and Jalbert Productions, provides some history of the race along with commentary from downhiller’s who’ve run the course.
It’s sobering and intense and the historic videos can be frightening.
Enjoy.
See you at the bottom (hopefully in one piece).

The Winter Film Festival:"Inside The World's Most Dangerous Race"

Edgework:
A short piece from CBS news on the famous Kitzbühel downhill, the legendary, ice-coated course that has wiped out the best downhillers in history. Skiing this course in competition makes you a part of a very exclusive club; winning the race makes you a legend.
Enjoy.

The Winter Film Festival: "Haute Route 2016 1"

Edgework:
A final look at our mini-series of videos and films on the classic Haute Route. This one features older skiers/ski mountaineers and running commentary. It’s intimate and it’s fun and exhausting.

The Winter Film Festival: How to Ski Tour the Haute Route

Edgework:
We got deep into the Haute Route this year and have two more videos on this classic ski mountaineering adventure. The Haute Route is part skiing trip/part winter mountaineering. Either way, it’s a classic.
This particular video, approximately 10 minutes long, provide an up close and personal look at the route that starts in Chamonix, France and ends in Zermatt, Switzerland. What sets it apart from some of the other videos is the quality of the video design and especially the animation sequences that trace the route from Chamonix to Zermatt. It’s very well done and certainly worth screening.
Enjoy.

The Winter Film Festival: What it Takes to Go Ski Mountaineering

Edgework:
IFMGA guide Todd Passey details what he brings when he takes on classic ski mountaineering adventures like The Haute Route. The mountains, and in particular mountain expeditions for skiing, climbing, glacier work, are no place for the unprepared or the amateurs. If you’re going to attempt something like the Haute Route or the Skier’s Haute Route (see previous video) you want someone like Todd Passey leading the way and watching after you.
Becoming an IFMGA guide is a very rigorous process; the standards are necessarily high because a mountain guide is entrusted with the lives of his clients.  My friends will not go into the backcountry or deep into the mountains without an IFMGA certified guide (it’s the highest certification and recognized around the world).
Do you want know why people want IFMGA guides? Because they get it and they’re prepared. Take a look at this fascinating short video as Todd goes through the equipment he’s packing for a short backcountry ski mountaineering trip. It’s absolutely amazing the level of detail and the amount of preparation he brings to his profession.

The Nightshift: 17 February 2017

Press Clippings:

Good Morning. It’s Friday, 17 February 2017 and this is the morning edition of The Nightshift, the world’s overnight news feed.
The President held a rather interesting press conference yesterday. Depending on your political point of view, it was either a)incredible or b)embarrassing.  The made-for-TV reality show that is the U.S. Government continues and it’s never without drama.
And..the world goes on.

The Winter Film Festival:"The Skier's Haute Route"

Edgework:
One of the great adventures of skiing is the “Haute Route”, or “high route” across the French and Swiss Alps from Chamonix to Zermatt, home of the Matterhorn. You can ski it (actually ski tour it) or you can hike; there are guides in Chamonix who will take you every exhausting step of the way. We’ve got some videos to be posted tomorrow on that classic route.
This particular journeys through the Urner Mountains in the Swiss Alps, going from Andermatt to Engleberg; it’s called the “Skier’s Haute Route” because of the great powder skiing runs it offers.  It is a classic ski adventure, a very real test of technique, nerve, and endurance. This film, sponsored by Salomon and Salomon FreeskiTV,  follows skiers Mike Douglas and Alexis Godbout as they commit to the trip of a life time.
It is a ski touring trip and the route is well known and not without its’ comforts–there are ski huts with caretakers  along the way, to give you a good nights sleep and a warm meal. But it is arduous: in exchange for the right to ski down untracked powder slopes, you must fulfill your part of the bargain by walking up them…on skis. The film is short but a great introduction to one of the skiing word’s legendary trips. It’s not quite as arduous as the trip form Chamonix to Zermatt, but it is just as dangerous and testing.
Enjoy.
And see you at the bottom.
