Good Morning, it’s Saturday, 3 March 2018, and this is the Morning Edition of The Nightshift.
Not good week for the White House. President Trump announced–without warning and despite advice from top economic advisors–new tariffs on imported steel (25%) and aluminium (10%). Most economists predict the tariffs, if implemented, will be bad for U.S. trade and could cause problems in the United States as foreign countries retaliate in a trade war, raising tariffs on American products like Levi blue jeans, Harley-Davidson motorcycles, and even big ticket items like Boeing passenger jets (Boeing is America’s largest exporter). Economists point out that despite the grandstanding, steel-using industries employ 80 times more people than steel-producing industries, so the tariff, if enacted (and there signs that it might not be), could hurt far more people than it helps. Trump had come under fire early in his career for using imported steel to build his office towers, instead of the more expensive American-produced steel. Hmmm. The ultimate cost for paying for the tariff will fall on American consumers and workers (of course). Although Trump would like for Americans to believe the tariffs are aimed at international adversaries like China, in reality–again–he’s got the facts wrong. America’s two largest steel suppliers are Canada and Brazil; our largest aluminum supplier is Canada. Didn’t know we were in an adversarial position with ….Canada?
Multiple media outlets have said that the sudden tariff program was a result of Trump feeling boxed in and cornered by events (Jared Kushner’s mounting legal and financial problems; the resignation of top aid Hope Hicks; continuing pressure from the Russia investigation) and that he came “unglued” as a result. With Hope Hicks gone, who is going to “handle” the President”? Hicks–from a distance–appears to be a very class act. It’s a good idea for her to look after her future and not be involved in any more White House drama.
The President’s sudden embrace of gun control initiatives took an equally sudden u-turn after a late night meeting with representatives from NRA. Will this be another case of sudden change in position due to political/money lobbying? Really–American leadership at every level needs to do a lot better.
Today is National Soup It Forward Day…..a great day to make a big pot of chicken soup and share with family and friends.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said in an interview that Russia has developed a new series of “nuclear powered” weapons–believed to be cruise missiles and an “underwater drone”– that can reach any country on earth and are “unstoppable”. While new to the mainstream news, the Pentagon acknowledged that they were aware of the new weapons systems and had already started to shift defense policy to accommodate the possibility of such offensive weapons. The bigger worry, said a Pentagon spokesman, was that the weapons might leak to rogue nations or states. Others believe the announcement of such weapons signals the start of a new “cold war”. The last one bankrupted and broke apart the USSR.
REI, one of the country’s largest outdoor retailers, has said that it will cease the sale, at least temporarily, of products from mega-brand distributor Vista Outdoor, who operates primarily in outdoor sports and shooting sports. The decision was made after REI members signed a petition to move away from brands that have a strong NRA affiliation. Among the famous brands leaving REI will be Camelback, Giro, Serengeti and Bolle’.

Hope Hicks, the Communications Director for the Trump White House has unexpectedly resigned just 24 hours after she was interviewed by the House Intelligence Committee. Hicks had been one of President Trump’s closest and most trusted confidants and advisors and had developed a reputation as someone who could “translate Trump”. Is the Hicks resignation simply a coincidence–she had said she might be leaving at some point in the future. There are no coincidences in the current White House.

Presidential advisor and son-in-law Jared Kushner has been stripped of his top-level security clearance. Kushner had improperly, incompletely and/or inappropriately filled out security clearance forms a reported three times so far and allegedly there were other severe concerns about his suitability for a top security clearance. Chief of Staff John Kelly downgraded Kushner’s security clearance. He also downgraded the security clearance of any White House staffers who had been operating with “interim security clearances”. Ouch.
