Closing in on the final rounds of competition and awarding of medals in the 2018 Winter Oympics.  Television coverage in the United States is via NBC and NBCSN; there is also coverage on the Olympic Channel, CNBC, and USA network (well done to NBC for putting all of this on air). Check your local listings as programming can vary due to weather conditions and programming considerations. One more thing: the visual purity and graphics produced by NBC in support of their telecasts reached the level of broadcast art in last week’s coverage, with some of the most stunning picture framing, color saturation, and on-screen graphics of any Olympics.
One more thing: 4K. Has anyone been able to view any of the coverage in 4K? It’s out there, but you have to hunt to find it. The Media Bunker has been unsuccessful in accessing it (so far).
The following events are scheduled for today.
Alpine Skiing (scheduled but always tentative due to wind)
Biathlon
Bobsled
Cross Country
Curling
Figure Skating
Freestyle Skiing
Ice Hockey
Nordic Combined
Short Track
Snowboarding
Speed Skating
Remember: The nightly prime-time telecasts will feature the most popular events; if you want to see some of the more unique/esoteric events, check out NBCSN, and the other networks (especially the Olympic Channel, which has up to 50 different feeds available on demand. ) which are available all day on air, online, and streaming. Some events at this Olympics have been delayed or postponed, especially the Alpine Skiing events, due to high winds, so NBC’s programming will shift accordingly. We follow everything via NBCSN since they tend to show it all.

The 2018 Winter Olympics: How to Train Like Mikaela Schiffrin

Nightshift Sports:
Last night, before the Downhill run, we posted a short video (thank you, you tube) about how Lindsey Vonn, arguably the best downhiller in the world, trains. Lindsey is at the very edge of physical limits when she trains–because first she knows how dangerous the downhill hill can be(and the price for a mistake) and secondly, she has been injured, and so has to rehab to reach, again, her peak performance capability.
Before the Combined–which is an event in which the Olympians must both run a downhill and a slalom course (winner is the one with the lowest combined time)–is the perfect time to take a look at Mikaela Shiffrin’s training routine. Mikaela is the best slalom skier in the world so it seems totally appropriate to see what she does to prepare for those seconds on the competitive slope. And, it’ll also give you a chance to compare what Mikaela does vs. what Lindsey does.
Again–it takes more than talent to be world class. It takes a level of commitment many just can’t muster.

Good Morning, it’s Thursday, 22 February 2018,  and this is the Morning Edition of The Nightshift.
The U.S. Women’s Hockey team beat Canada in the Gold medal final of the Olympics, winning in a dramatic shootout after playing three regular periods and one overtime period. Congrats to the team, which won Gold for the first time in 20 years. In the Women’s “Super Combined” (a downhill run + a slalom run), Mikaela Shiffrin took the Silver medal. Mikaela posted the fastest time in slalom but it was not enough to overcome the 1.21 second deficit in the downhill that Swiss skier Michelle Gisin had over Shiffrin. Gisin won the Gold medal in the event. U.S. skier Lindsey Vonn, leader after the downhill portion of the event, hooked a gate in the slalom run and went off course.   U.S. skier David Wise won the Men’s Skiing Half-Pipe, repeating his Gold Medal win from Sochi.
You can see the running medal count with this direct link.
Tributes continue to pour in from all over the world for The Reverend Billy Graham, who has died at the age of 99. Graham prayed with 12 U.S. Presidents and spread his Christian beliefs throughout the world via live appearances, radio, and television shows. It was estimated that during his lifetime, he spoke to over 250 million people.
Today is National Margarita Day. Still looking for that lost shaker of salt? Hope not.

Good Morning, it’s Wednesday, 21 February 2018,  and this is the Morning Edition of The Nightshift.
Lindsey Vonn won a Bronze medal in the Olympic Women’s Dowhnill and, in the process, became the oldest woman to ever win a medal in Alpine skiing. Congratulations to Vonn who came back from several very serious injuries to compete, again, at the world class and Olympic level. The U.S. Women’s Ice Hockey team has played their way into the finals and will meet Canada for the Gold. The women can do no worse than a silver. In Cross Country, Kikkan Randall and Jesse Diggins ended a very, very long U.S. drought in cross country by winning the Gold the Women’s Cross Country Team Sprint. The U.S. Women also won Bronze in the long track women’s pursuit. Today: the Women’s Combined, pitting Mikaela Shiffrin(Slalom specialist) against Lindsey Vonn(downhill specialist) in an event that tests the two edges of skiing performance (downhill for pure speed; slalom for agility) by having competitors run both events, lowest overall time wins. There will be plenty of competition from the other entrants in the event. So far, the U.S. women are having a pretty terrific Olympics.

The 2018 Winter Olympics: How to train like Lindsey Vonn

Nightshift Sports:
Lindsey Vonn, one of the best downhiller racers of all time, is scheduled to run tonight, in prime time in NBC’s Winter Olympics coverage. Vonn has missed the last two Olympics due to injury, but she has come roaring back and is now, again, at the top of the food chain in downhill racing. If you want to know what it takes to be a World Cup Champion and Olympic Medalist, watch this short video to see how Lindsey Vonn trains.
The question for world class athletes is not necessarily about talent, but about desire to compete and be the best.
Do you want it–anything–bad enough to train like Lindsey?
