Equifax got hacked. Big time. Over 143 million (one hundred forty-three million) records were stolen. Equifax is a big credit reporting service (one of three) and this type of data breach is not supposed to happen at a company that deals with such sensitive data. I talked with a computer expert about it and he said that big hacks like the one that Equifax (and now 143 million Americans) go through are typically enabled because the company (Equifax) is using computer systems with legacy hardware and legacy software. In Equifax’s case, they were also using “open source” software. Does that sound ominous for a company that has a massive amount of personal financial data on millions of people. It was.
You’re going to have to deal with it and take some action (sign up for credit monitoring; freeze your credit). To understand the dimensions of the problem, read this piece about the value of data on the “dark web”.
The whole thing is scary. Did someone tell you life in the future would be easier?

Cut it out

Talk to someone in their 20s or 30s about their television habits and you find out one thing really quick: it’s not your parents TV anymore. It’s also not your parents’ Cable TV or satellite TV package anymore. The millennials have had it with overpriced subscription services that deliver plenty of programming they don’t want (Indian professional cricket anyone) and none of the programming they really like (Game of Thrones). So, cords are being cut at a record rate; Variety projects 22 million people will cut the cable cord in 2017 alone. This is a crisis for long-time cable mainstays like ESPN, which is losing not only its audience but its programming touch (how many guys bitching about sports can you take in a 24 hour period?). Get behind the headlines and do some deep background on one of the defining media trend of our time by reading Variety’s take on the phenomenon that is already reshaping the media landscape.

The Value of Bonds
Paying Attention:

Perhaps the biggest franchise in movie history is one that started in the 1960s with Dr. No. That would be Bond, James Bond, and now rights to the Bond films are about to be re-evaluated as they go up for sale. Created by writer Ian Fleming–himself once a member of Britain’s secret service, although not quite as dashing as the agent he created–the feeling in Hollywood is that the Bond films (and franchise) have been under-exploited. This thought in an era in which every single film brand is marketed in every single channel. To their credit, the producers of the bond films, Eon Productions (owned originally by the Broccoli and Saltzman families and, since 1975, solely by the Broccoli family) have constantly renewed the franchise by updating Bond and bringing in ever-more-charismatic actors to play the English agent James Bond (James Craig is the latest). The focus on the films first does give the series a certain level of artistic purity; that could change because of the money involved. The deal for the biggest un-tapped franchise in movie history is going down soon; here’s what you need to be informed on the movie deal of the century.
