HHS Secretary Tom Price has resigned over the scandal about his private jet  travel. He is reported to have spent as much as $1.0 million on private jets while performing his duties as Health and Human Services Secretary. He was ineffective as HHS leader, ineffective in the House, and will not be missed.
The Mayor of San Juan, Puerto Rico–who is on the ground there–has complained that the relief efforts from the United States to assist the hurricane ravaged island are not happening fast enough and that Puerto Rico is still suffering. The President–who is not on the ground in Puerto Rico–has told the press that efforts are going very well. There’s a bit of a disconnect between the two scenarios.

The heat is being turned up on the White House for the ineffective manner in which they are handling the hurricane crisis in Puerto Rico. There are news reports of containers of relief goods stuck on the docks in Puerto Rico and there is no effective communications across the island. We’ve seen this type of administrative failure before during Hurricane Katrina.
President Trump is proposing a new and radically different tax plan. It has not received favorable response. The main beneficiaries are wealthy individuals and families who will no longer be subject to the AMT (Alternative Minimum Tax) or the Estate Tax.
HHS Secretary Tom Price is under fire for running up a $400,000 private jet bill while, allegedly, working on government business. Price has also been criticized in the past for some of his stock trading practices while a member of Congress. Perhaps it’s time to face reality: Price is not working in the public interest and needs to be fired.

It’s over for the Obamacare repeal. The proposed vote on the contentious issue has been withdrawn. Perhaps a totally new look at health care should be taken, not one that just deals with the cost of insurance premiums but the underlying cost of medical care, which has spiraled up and out of control. A short course in medical economics might help lawmakers if they are really serious about re-setting the healthcare system in the U.S.
Puerto Rico is in very difficult shape. Power is out (and will be out for months), key supplies are in short order, and relief is not yet readily available. The White House has been on the sidelines for this one–is this President Trump’s Katrina?
Judge Roy Moore won the U.S. Senate primary contest in Alabama, beating a candidate, Luther Strange, endorsed by President Trump. Steve Bannon backed Roy Moore. So much for White House influence.
