The Paddle Economy: Scottsdale 2015, Part II

(UPDATED WITH AUCTION RESULTS).The Arizona auctions have become increasingly important in the world collector car scene over the last decade. The offerings are increasingly diverse (and expensive) and estimated prices feed off the major sales coming out of Pebble Beach in the famous auctions held there in the fall. Here, a selection of the most interesting offerings from Bonham’s–an auction house that features not just automobiles, but fine art, memorabilia, and other interesting  collectibles (hint: if you like fine shotguns, please pay attention to Bonham’s twice a year auctions of fine sporting arms). Here, the details on Bonham’s in Arizona in 2015. Sale results from the auction are posted below. The buyer’s premium has been included.

The New Swiss Bank Account is a New York Condo

Press Clippings: New York magazine continues to deliver the goods when it comes to timely, incisive and important journalism. A recent issue contained an extensive and very well researched piece on an undercurrent of foreign money that’s flooding into New York real estate–some of it legal and some of it questionable–and in the process driving up prices for all classes of New Yorkers.  Well worth your time.

The Paddle Economy: A Pebble Beach Shopping List, Part III

Paying Attention(updated with sold pricing): We tend to focus on the auction houses that concentrate on European (and American) sports cars in this annual survey. There are certainly some blockbuster collectibles crossing the block at Pebble Beach this year, and RM Auctions, which treats this sale like the Super Bowl of collector car auctions, has some very desirable offerings coming to market as do all of the big houses. As with each of these surveys, you are encouraged to click each link to review the specs and provenance on any automobile you’re interested in and also to download and go through the full catalog.  The goal with the survey is always to point out interesting cars (or trending cars)  and to educate about the market and market direction. Even better advice: get a nice glass of wine (or a Scotch) and roll through various auction catalogs. Time very well spent.  No need to have all your investment accounts tied up in stocks, bonds, or even cattle; collector automobiles have been performing very, very well over the past few years and this year should see another set of records set at Pebble Beach, both for the auctions themselves and specific models of cars. It was at Pebble when we first noticed that Aston was starting to move up. Who’s going to start to move this year? Although the trend is already up, Porsche and Porsche race cars certainly have lots of room to appreciate.  Lots to see (and yes, the pun is intended) so let’s get to it. Items without a “Sold” price were either withdrawn or did not sell.

The Paddle Economy: A Pebble Beach Shopping List, Part 1

Paying Attention (updated with final sales prices). Part 1  of our annual survey of the best and most interesting of the Pebble Beach auctions covers the Bonham’s auction conducted at The Quail automobile gathering at Pebble Beach. The Bonham’s auctions are always special because their auction team not only assembles a terrific group of automobiles for the sale, but their team also goes out of their way to find a broad spectrum of automobilia, from books to posters to drawings and models and sculptures. It’s a very broad based auction with plenty of options for the collector. This year, Bonham’s scored a special group of  Ferraris from the Maranello Rosso collection; a number of these cars are featured in our picks for Part II of the Pebble Beach Shopping List. Most amazing: Bonham’s will offer the ex-Jo Schlesser 250GTO at auction. What price will this car bring?  Because the Maranello Rosso Collection is packed with highly desirable Ferraris, we’ve pulled a limited selection for this survey but encourage you to browse the catalog  ands Bonham’s has–to their credit–done an amazing job in detailing the provenance of the cars on offer. Well done, guys.  As with each of our surveys of the Pebble Beach Auctions, you are encouraged to clink the links for each car to obtain more information; a thorough reading of any of the major auction catalogs will provide you with an amazing education about the market and the cars that make up the market. Also, you can link directly to Bonham’s site just by clicking on their name below. (note this article was originally published in August). If a sold price is not listed, either the item was withdrawn or was unsold.

The Paddle Economy: A Pebble Shopping List, Part II

Paying Attention (updated with final sales prices): Each year, we take some time to  review the cars that are offered on auction at Pebble Beach. There are other big collector/classic car auctions in the world, but over the last decade, Pebble Beach has emerged as THE auction, the one where record prices are set and trends are defined. This year, as in years past, we’ll take a look at the major auctions for collectors by selecting some of the most interesting items going on the block. Next up:  the Gooding&Company Pebble Beach Auction for 2014. Note that each car selected is linked to the page that fully describes that car in the Gooding Auction Catalog. You are strongly encouraged to clink the links for each to obtain more (and fascinating) detail on each Lot.  You can reach the online catalog just by clicking on the Gooding&Co. name below.
