The last major of the year is finished and Justin Thomas has won it, become the PGA Champion at the age of 24, at Quail Hollow in Charlotte. Thomas is the son of a PGA pro.
Thomas was three under part on the final day, and was eight under for the tournament. Three day leader Kevin Kisner was three over for the day, finished at four under for the tournament, and in a tie for 7th. Francisco Molinari and Patrick Reed tied for second, each at six under. Both went four under par for the day. Rickie Fowler made a last day charge and moved into a tie for 5th; he was also four under on the day, and Hideki Matsuyama who had been so strong all week was one over the day, and also tied for 5th.
The young guns of golf have taken over, with only Sergio Garcia (Masters) of the old guard, capturing a Major win in 2017. The other three winners–all Americans–were some of golf’s best and youngest: Spieth (British Open), Koepka (US Open), and Thomas (PGA).
The last big event of the year will be the Fedex Cup playoffs, which start on 24 August and run through 24 September. The big news coming out of the PGA is that Rory McIlroy has announced that his schedule for the remainder of 2017 is “undecided”. He is still recovering from an early season injury and has said he may not play again this year…which is very disappointing since Rory is the current Fedex Cup champion, winning the title in 2016.

Good Afternoon, it’s Sunday, 13 August 2017, and this is the late afternoon edition of The Nightshift, the world’s overnight news feed.
It got out of control in a hurry. A white nationalist rally conducted in Charlottesville, Virginia, home of the University of Virginia, turned deadly when a car drove into a crowd of counter protestors, killing one person and injuring 19 others. The rally was to protest a plan to take down a statue of General Robert E. Lee. This is not good for either position. Check our direct link to The Washington Post (Below) for very in depth coverage of this incident.
In Washington, the President is taking heat for not strongly criticizing the white supremacists who organized and took part in the rally. The divisions between alternative policy positions and cultural goals is just getting more extreme. We are all Americans. Let’s not take sides against one another.
Retired Navy Admiral Mike Mullen, former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, has said in an interview that he is extremely concerned about the current situation with North Korea. Mullen noted that the recent inflammatory rhetoric, coming from both sides, has reduced “room for maneuvering” in terms of finding a diplomatic solution. When the pros are worried, we should all be worried.
The PGA Tournament will wind up today. Going into the final round, Kevin Kisner, who has been one of the leaders for everyday of the tournament, was in front at 7 under, followed by Chris Stroud and Hideki Matsuyama at 6 under. The tournament concludes today; expect drama on the closing holes. This edition of The Nightshift is going out so late, you can probably still catch the ending on TV (CBS), or via streaming from the PGA site.
Today is National Prosecco Day. Cheers. And, because one National Day is never enough, it’s also National Lefthanders Day. Enjoy it, all you lefties and those of us who are ambidextrous.

It’s three rounds down and one to go at the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow.
Sitting at the top of the leaderboard, as he has been for the first three founds, is Kevin Kisner, at 7 under par.
In second, Hideki Matsuyama and Chris Stround (who got into the tournament by winning the tournament prior to the pGA) at 6 under par. Jason Day, who was contending for the lead–or at least within striking distance–blew up his chances with a series of disastrous decisions and shots on the 18th hole and dropped all the way back to 16th position where he’s even for the tournament. Luis Oosthuizen and Justin Thomas are both in contention at 5 under par.
Missing from the top of leaderboard:pre-tournament favorites Rory McIlroy (T-47) and Jordan Spieth (T37). Quail Hollow has turned out to be a surprising tough track for the pros.

As if North Korea wasn’t enough of a challenge, the White House is considering “options” for dealing with Venezuela and China is barking about U.S. Navy patrols in the South China Sea. The President remains on vacation in New Jersey.
A white nationalist rally at the University of Virginia has the state declaring an emergency.
A train crash in Egypt killed at least 37 people.
The winning Mega-Millions ticket, worth $393 million was sold in Illinois. Someone is going to have a very nice summer, fall, winter, spring vacation–for a very long time. Congrats.
The tension created as a result of the U.S./North Korea verbal conflict has caused a global selloff in the stock markets. The markets do not like uncertainty and this conflict is about as uncertain as they get.
Ezekiel Elliot, an all-star running back for the Dallas Cowboys, has been suspended by the NFL for six games for domestic violence allegations. No formal charges were filed against Elliot, who has said he would appeal.
Two golfers share the lead in the PGA Championship golf tournament, at eight under, They are Kevin Kisner and Hideki Matsuyama. Jason Day is close behind at six under. The tournament continues through the weekend.

The PGA Championship: Round 2

Round two of the PGA Championship was suspended, first due to weather, then due to darkness. But it didn’t slow down the rush to the head of the pack at Quail Hollow.
There was movement at the top of the leaderboard: Kevin Kisner, and Hideki Matsuyama are the leaders at 8 under. Matsuyama was 7 under for the day. Jason Day closed in on the leaders and is now at six under.
Jordan Spieth, looking to complete a golf grand slam with a win at the PGA finished the day three over par. At least he made the cut. Phil Mickelson did not–the first time since 1995–nor did Sergio Garcia. A tough day on a tough course and it took some big and popular names out of the tournament.
Saturday will be another test; it’ll be interesting to see who rises to the top and who falls from the top of the leaderboard. Check out Nightshift Sports PGA Resource Post for information on channels for TV and streaming coverage as well as a selection of the best print posts.

The school yard trash talking between the White House and North Korea continued on Thursday. President Trump said, among other things, that the U.S. was “locked and loaded” in further response to North Korea’s comments about targeting Guam. The net result of the most recent round of dialogue was to raise tensions all over the world and send the American stock market down (again). Get a grip, guys.
Mitch McConnell remains a target of criticism from the White House. Only a matter of time before the White House completely loses whatever influence it had within Congress. That will pretty much assure than no significant legislation will be passed.
President Trump commented on theFBI’s pre-dawn raid at one at Paul Manafort’s residence, saying that he “…knows Paul Manafort. Haven’t spoken to him for a long time, but I know him.” Less than a ringing endorsement for the man who was once the Trump for President campaign manager. Trump also said the raid was “pretty tough stuff”. Yes it was. And there’s more coming as the investigation into possible Russian collusion with the Trump campaign continues.
The first round of the PGA Championship was completed yesterday at Quail Hollow. Kevin Kisner and Thorbjorn Olesen are the leaders at four under. Pre-tournament favs Jordan Spieth and Rory McIlroy are at plus one; Phil Mickelson–who always plays well in majors–carded an 8 over par and will have to produce a terrific round of golf today just to make the cut and play on the weekend.
Investors in Uber are suing founder and former CEO Travis Kalanick for fraud. They want Kalanick totally out of Uber and want control of the board. Uber’s had more than a few problems, but it is a massive enterprise and has made a lot of investors extremely wealthy. Perhaps there’s a better solution than totally booting out the guy who built it.

The North Korea/US confrontation of words continues. Trump’s comments were “improvised” (surprise) but while his rhetoric was hot, the White House’s military advisors were urging a much calmer approach to the situation. The American stock markets were all down over
President Trump took to twitter to criticize Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell. Whether or not it’s a good idea to make an enemy of the person who can help drive your agenda through Congress is not debatable: it isn’t. Slowly but surely, the paths to effectiveness and accomplishment are coming apart for this White House.
New Orleans flooded again. This time, not because of a hurricane but a huge rainstorm. Again, the scene was very reminiscent of Randy Newman’s song, “Louisiana 1927”, which states “Louisiana, they’re tryin’ to wash us away”. Tough times for the Crescent City.
The administration is kicking around an idea to “outsource” the Afghanistan war, in essence bringing in mercenaries to fight the conflict. What could possibly go wrong?
The PGA Championship starts today. It’s the fourth major in golf and brings together all the best players in the world for the event, which will be held at Quail Hollow in Charlotte, NC.

The PGA Championship: Round 1

Round one of the PGA Championship is in the books.
It was good for Kevin Kisner and Thorbjorm Olesen, who are both four (4) under par and co-leaders at the end of Day One at the tournament, which is being staged at Quail Hollow in Charlotte, NC.
It was also good for Brooks Koepka (three under); Tony Finau (two under); Patrick Reed, Paul Casey, and Rickie Fowler (also two under); and Jason Day (one under). Jordan Spieth was one over but that’s certainly within striking range given his talent.
It was not such a good day for Phil Mickelson (+8), Sergio Garcia (+4), or Henrik Stenson (+3).
As the old saying goes in pro golf, you can’t win a tournament on the first day of play but you can lose one.
Very true.
Some of the game’s top stars are in danger of not being around for the weekend.

The last golf major of the year starts today at Quail Hollow, in Charlotte NC. The usual suspects are there: Jordan Spieth (looking for a PGA win to complete his personal golf major “grand slam:”); Rory McIlroy (who’s been sensational on this course); Dustin Johnson (recovered from the fall that took him out of The Masters); Jason Day (who hopes to get it going, finally, in 2017); and Masters champion Sergio Garcia (could he pick up another major this week?). The course is long (7600 yard), tricky (tough greens), and mentally challenging.
