Good Morning, it’s Saturday, 4 November 2017 and this is the Morning edition of The Nightshift.
President Trump stopped off in Hawaii on his way to his first Asian trip. He did not receive a particularly warm reception from the locals, many of whom resent his criticism of Hawaiian-born former president Barrack Obama. The Asian trip will provide some relief for the President from the relentless stream of criticism he is facing in the U.S. over a broad range of issues.
The Daily  Grope: New York police are reportedly investigating the possibility of filing rape charges against Harvey Weinstein. Kevin Spacey’s time on “House of Cards”at Netflix is definitely over; Netflix has suspended filming of the series and also stopped production on another film Spacey was producing for them.
Today is National Candy Day. Any coincidence this day comes three days after Halloween?

Good Morning, it’s Friday, 3 November 2017 and this is the Mid-day edition of The Nightshift.
President Trump leaves for a long (12 day) trip to Asia today. Behind him, the hot mess in Washington continues as Congress ties to sort out a tax bill that some say favors the rich to the disadvantage of everyone else. Anyone surprised?
Bowe Bergdahl, convicted of desertion while serving a tour of duty in Afghanistan, where he was captured and held by the Taliban for 5 years, has escaped a prison sentence. He will be given a dishonorable discharge from the U.S. Army.
Donna Brazile, former head of the Democratic National Party, has published a book in which she alleges that Hilary Clinton and her campaign management team took control of the Democratic nominating process in 2016, effectively freezing Bernie Sanders out of a serious chance to win the nomination (and in the process, insuring that the Democrats would lose the election). Not good news for a party already in chaos.
Peter Schutz, the Porsche executive credited with saving the car model that became the company’s signature product–the Porsche 911–has died. A very well researched tribute to him is accessible via this link to the New York Times.

Good Morning, it’s Thursday morning, 2 November 2017 and this is the Morning  edition of The Nightshift.
The White House is releasing (finally) it’s outline for the much touted Tax Reform bill. It faces plenty of opposition, from both Republicans and Democrats.
The Daily Grope: Add movie icon Dustin Hoffman, producer/director Brett Rattner and actor Jeremy Piven to the list of men who have been accused of sexual harassment.
What started as a trickle of accusations has grown to a flood.
The Houston Astros won the 2017 World Series with a 5-1 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers. The game was played in Los Angeles and Houston was fast out of the box, scoring in the first inning against the favored Dodgers, who could never get it going. It was Houston’s first World Series championship, and it could not have come at a better time for the city that was decimated by floods during Hurricane Harvey. Congratulations to all the Astros and the city of Houston on this win.
Today is National Men Make Dinner Day. Ok guys, have at it–and don’t take the easy way out and order take out.

Miracles Happen

Houston wins the 2017 World Series, beating the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 7, by the score of 5 to 1. It was a classic World Series, with exceptional play by the two best teams in baseball. After a very difficult (to say the least) experience with Hurricane Harvey, the town and the team now have a lot to be thankful for as Houston rebuilds. Congrats, Astros.
The Fine Print: Votive candle of Jose Altuve, Houston Astros second baseman (and maybe the team’s most enthusiastic spirit) and the leading hitter in the major leagues this year, was created by someone who deserves credit. But we don’t know who that is…the candle was sent to the Media Bunker by one of our correspondents. So..if you created it, let us know and we’ll point the crowd in your direction. Well done.

An immigrant from Uzbekistan, Sayfullo Saipov, used a rented pickup truck to plow down bicycle riders and pedestrians in New York City yesterday afternoon, killing eight people and injuring eleven. Saipov was shot and captured by New York City Police. A hand written note pledging allegiance to ISIS was found in the truck.
The Daily Grope: Netflix has shut down production of “House of Cards”, their popular political series, in the wake of allegations against star Kevin Spacey. Netflix had previously announced the series would end after season six, but moved to stop production now while it deliberates what to do next.
The Houston Astros and the Los Angeles Dodgers will play a game 7 in the World Series tonight. Last night, the Dodgers, playing at home, beat the Astros 3-1, behind strong pitching from Rich Hill. Astros starter Justin Verlander was unable to keep the Dodgers off the scoreboard. It’s been a great and very even series. Now, one more game for the championship.

The indictments came down from Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation team: Paul Manafort and his associate Rick Gates, both charged with offenses ranging from failing to register as foreign lobbyists to money laundering. Summoned to court in Washington, D.C., both entered not guilty pleas.
The bigger legal event, however, was the guilty plea entered by former Trump Advisor George Papadopolous, for lying to the FBI. Papadopolous was a foreign policy advisor and his guilty plea has unnerved the Trump White House because of concerns that he has been cooperating with the FBI and Mueller’s team in the investigation. The length of time is a problem: Papadopolous was arrested in July of this year. The White House is a very tense place to be right now because everyone knows that there is more to come. The hot mess in Washington continues.
Representatives from Facebook, Twitter, and Google are to appear in Washington today to explain how the extent of Russian backed news stories and posts on their networks. Facebook has admitted that approximately 126 million Americans (one-half of the voting public) were exposed to Russian influenced communications via its site.
The Houston Astros and the Los Angeles Dodgers will play Game 6 of the 2017 World Series tonight, at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles. The Astros lead the best of five series by 3 games to two.
Today is Halloween–that’s one of our very best National Days. Happy Halloween.

Good Morning, it’s Monday, 30 October 2017 and this is the Morning  edition of The Nightshift.
The 2017 World Series delivered another incredible contest last night. The Houston Astros beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 13-12 (25 total runs in a baseball game!)in a 10 inning game that has already been dubbed a classic. The best way to appreciate the game (if you didn’t stay up late and watch it, like the team at the Media Bunker), is to read the New York Times account.  The Astros are something we haven’t  seen in baseball in a very long time, and their joy in playing and boosting each other up is obvious and infectious. This series has matched the best two games in baseball and shown us precisely why baseball is such a very neat and complex game. This has been the most entertaining World Series in recent memory and with all the agitation going on in other pro sports, it’s great to see both teams focused on the game and their team mates. What a wonderful World Series it’s been.  The next game is Tuesday night in Los Angeles. The Astros lead the series 3 games to 2.
Special Prosecutor Robert Mueller, who is investigating Russian interference/meddling/collusion, has dropped his first set of indictments. They are against former Trump Campaign Chairman Paul Manafort and Manafort’s right hand man and former Trump campaign official Rick Gates. The two were summoned to court in Washington, D.C., where the indictments were read.  Both men are facing a very difficult future.
