Let’s all say a prayer for the victims and the firefighters battling what is now the largest fire in California history. They need a weather break as well.A miracle would be most welcome.

Good Morning, it’s Thursday, 12 October 2017 and this is the Morning Edition of The Nightshift, the world’s overnight news feed.
The Napa Valley fires continue to devastate Northern California with no end in sight. The next hope for a weather break favorable to firefighters is this coming weekend. One of the main problems is the wind that is spreading the fire and embers continually. The fire fighters need to catch a weather break, as entire towns are being burned to the ground in this firestorm.
The Boy Scouts have announced that they will admit girls into the Cub Scouts and allow them to earn the coveted Eagle Scout ranking. Things are changing in Scouting, just like things are changing in the rest of the world. Are we headed into a society and culture without traditions?
The Cubs and Nationals will play one more game today to see who continues in the MLB Playoffs. The Nationals won yesterday’s game 5-0 behind a stellar performance by Stephen Strasburg. In yesterday’s other MLB playoff game, the New York Yankees beat the Cleveland Indians–winners of 22 straight games in the regular season–by a score of 5-2. The Indians were ahead two games to none in the best of five series and were heavy favorites to continue on. But they didn’t. The Yankees will face the Houston Astros next.
President Donald Trump, who’s always unhappy with the news media, has threatened to take the broadcast licenses away from the NBC network. Trump is hypersensitive to criticism of his actions and behavior and NBC is very aggressive at reporting every little misstep of the Trump administration. Both have had a lot to talk about recently. Such a comment by the President indicates that he doesn’t understand the nature of broadcasting (it’s individual stations that have licenses, not networks) and doesn’t appreciate the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution–the one that guarantees free speech for everyone, including politicians like Trump and NBC. Trump is also threatening to back out of NAFTA, de-certify the Iran Nuclear Treaty, and undermine Obamacare via executive order. In the meantime, many more people are talking about the 25th Amendment and how it works. What a mess.
The FBI is allegedly investigating film producer Harvey Weinstein, who is already under heavy media fire for sexual abuse charges from a wide variety of women. It’s not going to get better for Weinstein anytime soon.

Good Morning, it’s Wednesday, 11 October 2017 and this is the Morning Edition of The Nightshift, the world’s overnight news feed.
The Napa Valley fires that destroyed thousands of homes, burned wineries to the ground, and killed 17 people, continue to burn as efforts to contain and suppress the fire are frustrating. Not much progress is being made at this point in time. A break in the weather (i.e. more rain, less wind) would be a good thing.
The Spanish state of Catalonia–the wealthiest in the country–has declared its’ independence but put off the full ramifications of the event as they continue to have a “dialogue” with Spanish leaders. This one is confusing even to the people involved in it.
The U.S. Men’s National Soccer Team failed to qualify for the 2018 World Cup, losing to Trinidad and Tobago 2-1. Time for a complete overhaul on that perpetually under-performing athletic team. Start by cutting everyone but young star Christian Pulisic, who played like the game meant something (it did). It’s sports. No win, no place in the World Cup for the first time in over 30 years and time for a change. The U.S. has four years to rebuild and put together a great team. Hop to it.
The Utah policeman, Detective Jeff Payne, who manhandled and then arrested a hospital nurse who was following specific medical guidelines and just doing her job, has been fired. The police department made the correct decision in firing Payne.
It has been reported that the Israelis hacked into the software company Kaspersky Lab and found that Russian software agents were using Kaspersky’s anti-virus software to scan American computers around the globe, looking for intelligence and American secrets. Given the long-simmering tensions between the United States and Russia, what type of intellectual lightweight would install Russian software–of any kind–on an American government computer. Think about it.
Harvey Weinstein continues to receive very bad press, this time via a lengthy and well-researched article about his alleged sexual abuse published in the most recent edition of The New Yorker. His wife, fashion designer, Georgina Chapman, has announced that she is leaving him. It’s going to be quite some time before Weinstein sees a break in the condemnations raining down on him.

Transitions: Y.A. Tittle (1926-2017)
The Latest Word:
Y.A. Tittle (Yelberton Abraham) Tittle, died on Sunday night, 8 October 2017, at age 90. For football fans in the 1960s, Y.A.Tittle was the classic drop back passer who–banged up and battered and bloodied–always got up for the next play or the next game. As Quarterback for the New York Giants, coached by the legendary Allie Sherman, he took them to three straight title games in 1961, 1962, and 1963. The Giants failed to win any of them, but it never curbed the love that New York Giants fans had for Tittle, who was old when he got there after a trade from San Francisco and aged in the job. Born in Texas and educated at LSU, where he played football, Tittle became everyman’s folk hero, the player deemed too old and too slow to make it to the top, but who did it despite the odds, voted into the Hall of Fame in a career in which he threw for 242 touchdowns and over 33,000 yards in 17 seasons. Look closely at some of the early photos of Y.A. Tittle, and when you look into his eyes you see a gleam of competitiveness that reveals the true nature of the man.(Tittle was also the center of one of the most incredible sports photos of all time, a shot taken by Morris Berman of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, which shows Tittle, stunned and bleeding, after a hit from a Steelers lineman; you can access the photo via the NYT tribute to Tittle, which is linked below.) Y.A. was one of those guys who just knew how to win. As any real athlete knows, the most dangerous man on the field is not always the young highly touted rookie, but often the aging veteran who’s seen it all and is still in the game. Those are the guys that dismantle those who don’t pay enough attention to them. They know how to win.

Take some time and read the thoughtful, appreciative obituary of Y.A. from Today’s New York Times and then enjoy the tribute film from the NFL. Y.A.–thanks for all those grey, Sunday afternoon memories. You won’t be forgotten.

The Art of the Movie Trailer: Star Wars, The Last Jedi
Paying Attention:
Only one movie trailer could be so eagerly awaited that it was featured at half-time of the Monday Night Football Game: it was the trailer for Star Wars: Last Jedi. The trailer of the long awaited next installment in the classic Star Wars franchise got top billing at halftime and the folks at Star Wars/Lucas Films Ltd. have been kind enough to make it available to embed. Good for them and great for you. Nothing left to say, but push play and watch and enjoy.

The animosity between President Trump and Senator Bob Corker (R-Tennessee) continues. Corker joins a very small group of congressmen willing to challenge the policies and politics of the current administration. Let’s hope that others see that blindly following party political agendas is not the same as doing what’s best for the United States.
A huge fire is burning California’s prized wine country–the Napa Valley–to ash. So far, 10 deaths and 1500 homes destroyed and wineries burned to the ground as the fire races through Napa, Sonoma, and Mendicino Counties in California. Out-of-control fires are California’s particularly distinct form of natural disaster, equivalent in some ways to the hurricanes that plague the Gulf and Atlantic Coasts. This one needs to be brought under control in a hurry.
The BBC is reporting that North Korean hackers stole South Korean/U.S war plans. The North Koreans are good at hacking–remember what they did to the movie industry a few years ago.
Y.A.Tittle, the record-setting, Hall of Fame quarterback for the New York Giants, has died at age 90. He was an impressive competitor who took the Giants to three title games in the 1960s.
Los Angeles, Houston, and Chicago all advanced in the MLB Playoffs. Cleveland and the Yankees are tied at two games each in their best-of-five series.

Senator Bob Corker of Tennessee and President Trump are waging a rather spectacular war of words. Corker has said the current White House is like an “adult day care center”. Funny stuff, but it’s just business as usual in Washington.
Harvey Weinstein has been fired from the company he founded with his brother, Bob, The Weinstein Company, as fallout from a New York Times piece that alleges decades of very bad behavior on his part, continues.
