Good Morning, it’s Thursday, 30 November 2017, and this is the Morning Edition of The Nightshift, The World News Daily
Down Time: American Airlines  announced that a scheduling “glitch” has totally messed up flight crew planning for the busiest time of the year: the period around the Christmas holidays. As many as 15,000 holiday flights could be affected.  Will you be home for Christmas?
The Daily Grope: Add “Prairie Home Companion” creator, writer, and host Garrison Keillor to those fired because of inappropriate conduct. Keillor was terminated by NPR after an accusation was leveled at him. And that’s the news from Lake Woebegone. At NBC, the mess continues. Matt Lauer has issued a statement (“There are no words to express my sorrow and pain..” yada yada yada) about the accusations that resulted in his firing by NBC. According to some news outlets, two other women have come forth with additional accusations. Not good for the man who went from reporting the news to being the news.
President Trump is under fire for re-tweeting a series of anti-muslim videos promoted by a fascist British Right Wing Group (Britain First). Time to wind down the dialogue that is splintering the U.S.? In the meantime, the situation is heating up (again) on the Korean peninsula. At a time we could really use some experienced, nuanced, effective diplomacy we have……….
Shakeup: Eli Manning, the New York Giants quarterback, winner of two Super Bowls (and MVP in both of those Super Bowls) has been benched, in yet another astonishing goof by New York coach Ben Mcadoo. Mcadoo, who replaced two-time Super Bowl winner Tom Coughlin,  has a losing record as a head coach and  did not play football at the collegiate or professional level. Eli Manning is headed for the Hall of Fame. Giants fans are outraged at the move; even more outrageous is the fact that Mcadoo has decided to start Geno Smith, a former New York Jets bust at quarterback who has a 12-18 overall record. In other sports news, Tiger Woods returns to competition today in the World Hero Challenge. It will be Tiger’s first competitive outing in over a year; he as been recovering from back issues.
Today is National Stay Home Because You’re Well Day. Face it, it’s no fun to be home when you’re sick, but when you’re well…..that’s a totally different opportunity.

Good Morning, it’s Wednesday, 29 November 2017 and this is the Morning Edition of The Nightshift, The World News Daily
The most powerful man at NBC news has been terminated. Matt Lauer, anchor of NBC’s highly popular and massively profitable “Today” show was let go today as a result of credible sexual harassment allegations. The broadcast community–and especially the people who work on the “Today “show and inside NBC news–is in shock this morning. ABC, which has been battling NBC for the top spot in morning ratings, is no doubt going through a rather intense period of schadenfreude today.
North Korea has launched yet another ballistic missile, this one said to have the capability of reaching deep into America, with the ability to target not just the west coast but Washington, D.C. and the East Coast as well. The tension rams up on the Korean peninsula once again.
The Republicans have managed to ease the Trump sponsored tax reform bill out of a Senate committee. One Senator admitted, on camera, that “we won’t really know what’s in the bill we’re voting for until it’s passed”.  Really? Is possible for some people with a sense of responsibility to serve this country.
Today is National Package Protection Day. Keep your eyes open and stop “porch pirates” from stealing the package deliveries from your front porch or those of your neighbors–especially at this time of the year, when so many items will be delivered.

Breaking News: Matt Lauer Out At NBC

Matt Lauer, the anchor for NBC’s “Today” show and, reportedly, the most powerful man at NBC news, has been terminated due to allegations of sexual harrassment. The announcement was made by the network early this morning.
Expect quite an unusual and painful edition of the Today Show this morning.

Good Morning, it’s Tuesday, 28 November 2017 and this is the Mid-Day Edition of The Nightshift, The World News Daily
Did you survive Cyber Monday? According to CNBC, CyberMonday sales hit $6.59 billion, the biggest day ever. Now comes the tough part: paying off the credit cards.
The proposed tax reform bill is banging around the halls of congress and the longer it stays there, the more scrutiny the bill is gathering. Seems that it massively favors the rich at the expense of the not-so-rich and the poor. Anyone surprised by that?
There is deep worry in the administration that special counsel Robert Mueller and his team investigating possible Russian collusion/hacking in the 2016 Presidential election have managed to “flip” General Michael Flynn, former National Security Advisor for Trump. Although Flynn had the shortest term of any NSA, he was with the Trump campaign throughout the election cycle. Drip, drip, drip.
The Daily Grope: Representative John Conyers (D-Michigan) has been accused by multiple women of sexual misconduct. Conyers , until yesterday, the top Democrat on the House Judicial Committee, is 88. Maybe, certainly, it’s better for Conyers to step aside than go through a full House ethics committee hearing. Really–it’s time for him to leave anyway. The founding fathers wanted representatives to come to Washington, serve their country, and then go home. They did not intend for our political representatives to make it a career instead of a short-term national service.
Wayne Cochran, head of the C.C.Riders R&B band and known as the “white James Brown” for the energy and power of his performances has died at age 78. A video of Wayne Cochran performing is featured in today’s post (you know the drill…click the play button).  Cochran was a performing legend, known for his big hair and athletic dance moves. His unique spirit will be missed.

Good Morning, it’s Monday, 27 November 2017 and this is the Morning Edition of The Nightshift.
Today is CyberMonday–the biggest online shopping day of the year. If you’re reading The Nightshift, you’re already at your computer. So..start shopping(as soon as you finish today’s edition).
Off the Market: Prince Harry, of the English Royal Family, is engaged to marry American actress Meghan Markle. Harry–perhaps the most popular member of the English Royal Family (maybe possibly…Kate is pretty popular too)–is very charming, very relaxed, and is always going to do things a little differently than the rest of the family. We wish them the best.
The island resort of Bali is under siege from within: a volcano, Mt. Agung, inactive for decades, is spewing volcanic ash and threatening to erupt. Evacuations have been ordered for an area around the volcano and travelers trying to leave the island paradise are unable to get a flight out, as all flights have been cancelled, stranding an estimated 60,000 people.
The Daily Grope: Massage Envy, a franchise chain of massage studios, is dealing with accusations by over 180 clients that they were the victims of inappropriate behavior by Massage Envy employees. This is a very big problem for a company that deals with intimate contact between client and employee.
In one of the more bizarre football-related events yesterday, The University of Tennessee announced that it was rescinding an offer to current Ohio State Football Assistant Head Coach Greg Schiano to be its’ new head coach. The reason: Schiano was on the staff of Joe Paterno at Penn State when Jerry Sandusky was there (Sandusky was convicted serial rapist and child molester), and everyone on that staff has been stained by Sandusky’s vile actions. Expect Tennessee athletic director John Currie to be terminated after this embarrassing incident.

Good Morning, it’s Sunday, 26 November 2017 and this is the Morning Edition of The Nightshift.
The Thanksgiving holiday is winding down. On Monday, Washington will again take up the topic of tax reform. The new bill is great for corporations and not so great for everyone else. Expect a huge fight and a lot of pressure to get it passed.
Rance Howard, the film director perhaps most famous for being the father of actor/director Ron Howard has died at age 89.
Saturday was a big day in college football. No. 1 Alabama was upset by Auburn; Notre Dame lost to Southern Cal; Georgia beat Georgia Tech, and Clemson beat South Carolina in a day marked by long-standing cross state rivalries. The Alabama upset, which was preceded by the upset of Miami earlier in the week, has the potential to really scramble the national college football playoffs. Also: Chip Kelly, who was a success as a college coach at Oregon and a bust as a pro coach in the NFL, will be the new head football coach at UCLA. Arkansas fired Coach Bielama and Nebraska fired head coach Mike Riley. Florida also fired its head coach earlier in the season as did Ole Miss.

An attack by militants on a mosque in Egypt has killed over 235 people. The violence never stops in the Middle East.
No Surprise. There’s turmoil at the Consumer Protection Bureau as the outgoing head of the agency appoints his own successor and the President appoints a different person. Expect a court case.
President Trump claims he took himself out of the running for Time Magazine’s “2017 Person of the Year”.  Rather odd claim, since Trump had fake Time Magazine “Person of the Year” covers hanging in his golf clubs and businesses. Trump was “Person of the Year” in 2016 after winning the Presidential Election.
The Number 2 football team in the country, Miami lost to Pittsburgh by the score of 24-14. Miami was previously undefeated. The loss scrambles, again, the national playoff picture. No. 1 Alabama plays cross state rival Auburn today in another key football game.

Former national security advisor Michael Flynn, under investigation by Special Counsel Robert S. Mueller III for possible involvement in the Russian meddling/hacking of the 2016 Presidential election, may be moving closer to being a cooperating witness/source. This possibility comes as a result of the fact that Flynn’s attorneys are no longer sharing information with the Trump administration’s lawyers. If Mueller has “turned” Flynn, expect even more stress at the White House.
An Argentine submarine with 44 men on board has disappeared. There were reports of an explosion in the last reported location of the submarine, but the vessel has not yet been located and hope of finding survivors is decreasing by the hour.
President Donald Trump is at Mar-A-Lago for the Thanksgiving holiday. The White House claims it’s a working trip; the President has a round of golf scheduled for this morning.
Ole Miss upset No. 14 Mississippi State last night, by the score of 31-28. There is serious bad blood between the Rebels and Mississippi State (who it is alleged “turned in” the Ole Miss football program for a series of violations) and the Rebels played like it, beating State in every facet of the game. There is speculation that Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen will leave for another head coaching job at the end of the season. In other football games, Dallas lost again, this time to the Chargers, 28-6; the Vikings beat the Lions 30-23, and the Giants lost to the Redskins 20-10(expect Giants head coach Ben McAdoo to be fired at the end of the season).

The Work Ethic of Willie Nelson

Paying Attention:
Last Tuesday night, thanks to the generosity of our friends at Bill Young Productions (they produce almost every TV commercial that airs for touring music acts; at one point a Bill Young produced commercial was playing every 35 seconds in North America) and Houston producer Mike Hulsey, the hardest working man in show business, I went to see an American icon–Willie Nelson–perform at the new Smart Financial Center in Sugarland, Texas. Nelson is well known for both his look, instantly recognizable voice, and the songs that he’s created and sings, including “On The Road Again”, “Hello Walls”, “Pretty Paper”, “Funny How Time Slips Away”, “Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain”, and “Crazy”, among others. Willie is 84 now, and was in the midst of a short 9 stop late fall tour with his band The Family.
The show was tight, professional, seamless and remarkable in more than a few ways. For one thing, it would be impossible to determine how old Willie Nelson was by watching him perform. His guitar playing is marked by the amazing dexterity of both hands and his drawling, Texas voice doesn’t waver or crack when he  sings. Nelson moved smoothly through the show, with no rest between songs; there was no extended talking between the numbers–actually, the most talking he did during the show was to introduce the five members of his touring band, none of whom used electronic instruments. Nelson played in front a huge Texas flag and was in constant interaction with the crowd, both during and after the show, when he went to the front of the stage and graciously shook hands and signed autographs.
His touring protocols are very finely tuned, and by the time Nelson had finished up with autographs and shakes, his road crew had stripped the stage of equipment and sound amplifiers. As our car was brought up from the parking lot, Willie’s bus drove past, on the way to his next gig later in the week. It’s safe to say that Willie Nelson has got the performing thing down.
Willie Nelson first made his reputation as a songwriter and wrote some of the biggest hits in the history of country music, but it was only a matter of time before he started performing and he hasn’t stopped since. His bio lists his career as starting in 1956 and it’s still not over–one part of being a legend is being around long and doing enough to create a serious legacy of work. That Willie Nelson has done, in spades.
As an icon, there is much to admire about Willie Nelson besides his music, his musicianship, and his unique voice and phrasing.  After doing some research on Willie, I came away even more impressed with something that is seldom mentioned about the “red headed stranger”–his work ethic. There are few performers, in any area of music, that have been as productive, as consistently, as Willie Nelson.
For the record, here are some key metrics of the Work Ethic of Willie Nelson:
Recorded 72 Studio Albums
Produced 10 Live Albums
Included on 37 Compilation Albums
Created 2 Sound Track Albums
Featured in 35 Music Videos
Released 110 Single Records
Generated 25 Number 1 Singles (US)
Generated 32 Singles (Overall)
Named a 1996 Kennedy Center Honoree
One of the main organizers of the Farm Aid charity
Co-Chair of NORML (National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws)
Has written 337 songs
On the Board of Directors of Habitat for Horses
Advocate for American Horse Slaughter Prevention ActInducted into Country Music Hall of Fame 1993
Inducted into National Agricultural Hall of Fame 2011
Gershwin Award Winner 2015
Rolling Stone Magazine 100 Greatest Singers
Rolling Stone Magazine 100 Greatest Guitar Players
Created Willie’s Roadhouse channel on Sirius XM Radio
Created The Willie Nelson Bio-Diesel Fuel Brand (made from vegetable oil)
Willie Nelson has not only outlived most of his contemporaries, he’s outworked them. At 84, he’s still stirring it up and turning it on in road shows. The lesson here is pretty easy to get: we can all do more. Have at it and don’t tell me you’re too old to do it. You aren’t.
